May 15, 2025 marks two full years since Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth’s inauguration day! In that time, we’ve been proud to serve you through countless community events, infrastructure improvements, public safety initiatives, day-to-day city services, policy work, and more. It’s important for us to continually reflect back on our work to see how far we’ve come and to help us look ahead at what’s next. HEALTH & SAFETY

New Vivent Health+TPAN Location Open on Broadway

Vivent Health+TPAN have a brand new location at 5537 N Brooadway right here in the 48th ward! Vivent Health+TPAN delivers high-quality, integrated HIV healthcare, social services, and prevention. They work to advance health equity and justice so everyone impacted by HIV can live their best and healthiest life.

With the future of federal HIV care funding uncertain, we’re thrilled to see the expansion of this vital resource in our own community. See Vivent Health+TPAN’s press release about the new location and photos from the ribbon cutting on our blog.

SAVE THE DATE: Vehicle Emissions Testing

When: Saturday, June 14 from 11am-3pm
Where: Ismaili Jamatkhana Parking Lot (6259 N Broadway)
Learn more about Illinois emissions testing online.

The federal Clean Air Act requires most gasoline-fueled vehicles more than four years old to get an emissions test every two years. Due for a smog check? Come by the Ismaili Jaamtkhana parking lot for free emissions testing.

Porkchop Summary Closure

Following a shooting last weekend near Porkchop, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) have issued a summary closure of the business while the incident is under investigation. Porkchop has five days from the day the closure was issued to appeal or surrender their business license. Pending court proceedings, the closure may result in the owners permanently losing their business license. Public safety is our top priority, and closing a business is a last resort.

DEVELOPMENT & ENGAGEMENT

Ridge Closed Due to $9 Million Sewer Main Replacement

As of May 5, 2025, Ridge is temporarily closed to through traffic between Ashland and Broadway (with a full closure between Ardmore and Edgewater Ave) due to the ongoing $9 million sewer main replacement project. Vehicles should follow posted detour signs. Westbound #84 Peterson buses will be rerouted to Devon, while Eastbound buses will be rerouted to Foster. Local businesses will remain open during construction.

Northbound traffic is detoured North on Broadway to Devon, then West on Devon to Clark, then South on Clark back to Ridge (Red lines/arrows)
Southbound traffic is detoured South on Clark, then East on Foster, then North on Broadway back to Ridge (Blue lines/arrows)
With the full closure of Ridge between Glenwood and Ardmore, there is local traffic permitted on Ridge between Broadway and Glenwood south of the project and between Clark and Ardmore north of the project (Green lines)

Commuters can expect closures along Ridge through August. See full closure timeline and bus reroute details on our blog.

Check Out Two New Edgewater Murals Thanks to SSA #26

Thank you to Edgewater/Broadway Special Service Area 26 for sponsoring two new murals along Broadway! Zoning Advisory Council (ZAC) members are neighbors in our community who are interested in land-use and development in the 48th ward. ZAC members hold a one-year term, with the option of re-applying for a second year. Call for Nationwide CTA President Search

Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth recently joined other City Council colleagues in signing on to a letter calling for a nationwide search for the next CTA president.

As many of our 48th ward neighbors know, CTA standards have fallen in the past five years, consistently failing to return to pre-COVID levels of ridership, reliability, safety, and hygiene. As the mayor considers who should fill the position of CTA predsident, it is essential that we conduct an extensive search for someone with the user experience and technical expertise necessary to deliver badly-needed improvements equitably and efficently. Wayne & Ridge Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon Meeting Recap

We are thrilled to have secured $1.3 million in funding to bring the Wayne and Ridge Pedestrian project to fruition! See the proposed safety improvement plans above. Review the meeting slides here. This project will include Chicago's first ever Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon! Green Social Housing Ordinance Passes City Council

Last week, the City Council voted 30-18 in favor of Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth's Green Social Housing Ordinance. Green Social Housing (GSH) is an environmentally and fiscally sustainable housing model that will:

Increase City-support affordable and mixed-income housing production by up to 50%
Use green building standards to improve indoor air quality and reduce tenants’ utility bills by an average of $572/year
Significantly reduce development costs
Provide permanent affordability (the affordability requirement doesn’t expire)
Reinvest in gains; equity over time can be invested into additional projects and deeper levels of affordability

Zoning Feedback Opportunity: 5259 N Clark

Feedback is open for a proposed zoning change from B1-2 to B3-2 at 5259 N Clark (Devil Dawgs & Demijohn). Learn more about this request on our blog. The 48th ward office will be closed on Monday, May 26 for Memorial Day and Friday, May 30 for staff professional development. While we are away, please contact 311 for non-emergency requests. Garbage Collection Schedule
During the holidays, garbage collection schedules may shift by 24-48 hours. During weeks with city holidays, put your bins out 24 hours ahead of your scheduled pick up day to avoid delays.

Spring Weather Reminders

Spring is here and it's important to be prepared for heavy rainfall. Visit our blog to review resources for reporting water collecting in the street, managing emergency trees, and preventing flooding in your home ro basement. We also encourage you to sign up for MWRD's Overflow Action Day alerts to help ease pressure on this Chicago Sewer system during heavy rainfall.

Call for CPS CEO with Valid Educator's License

In March 2025, the Chicago Board of Education passed a resolution requiring that both the interim CEO and the next permanent CEO of Chicago Public Schools hold a valid Illinois Professional Educator License. This resolution was in line with the values of educators, students, and parents who want CPS’s leader to have experience as an educator.

Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth has joined many of her City Council colleagues in signing a letter calling for the Chicago Board of Education to stand by this resolution, because our students deserve leadership with the necessary qualifications and experience. Read the full letter on our blog.

You are also invited to attend one of many community meetings the Board will be hosting over the next several weeks to gather feedback. All meetings will be held in person, and all will include both Spanish and ASL translation. The nearest one to the 48th ward is at Amundsen High School on May 21. Learn more and RSVP here.

WHERE IN THE WARD IS LENI?

Last weekend, our office hosted an Electronics Recycling Event and Compost Fair at the ward yard! Neighbors came by between 10am and 12pm to safely discard of old electronics and batteries and to learn about composting at home!

Leni joined Alderpeople Clay and Martin for the State of Uptown, an annual event and conversation with business leaders about the topics impacting them most.

Our Neighborhood Services Manager Conor recently adopted a bird from Chicagoland Exotic Animal Rescue (CLEAR). Meet Flight D. Eisenhower! Conor is the third 48th ward staff member to adopt a pet from CLEAR, a 48th-ward-based nonprofit that rescues exotic birds and reptiles and educates the public on how to safely interact with these animals. Senn Teacher, Trevor Nicholas, was cheered on by his family, colleagues, and students as he threw out the first pitch at the Cubs Game on May 5th at Teacher Appreciation Night in recognition of being a Golden Apple Finalist! Congratulations, Mr. Nicholas, we’re so proud of you! Mr Nicholas is a music teacher and 2x Grammy Award Finalist!

May is AANHPI Heritage Month! This week, Leni attended the Asian American County City Staffer Lunch and Press Conference at City Hall! Thanks to Peter from La Patisserie P. right here in the 48th ward for donating dessert!

Our second annual Older Adults Resource Fair went off without a hitch! May is national Older Adults Month and this event was a great way for our neighbors to connect with resources like healthcare, community support, and legal services. Looking forward to next year!

MAY IS OLDER ADULTS MONTH

May is national Older Adults Month, a time to recognize older adults' contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm our commitment to serving older adults. The 2025 theme, Flip the Script on Aging, focuses on transforming how society perceives, talks about, and approaches aging. It encourages individuals and communities to challenge stereotypes and dispel misconceptions.

The 48th ward has a large population of older adults who we are dedicated to supporting year round whether by improving the safety of our infrastructure, hosting events like our annual Older Adults Resource Fair, or fighting for accessibility policy at City Hall. Our vision for the 48th ward is a neighborhood where everyone can live and thrive, regardless of age, and we encourage you to reach out to our office at info@the48thward.org or (773) 784-5277 if you have questions or concerns about the resources that are available to the older adults in our community.

Visit the Edgewater Satellite Senior Center

The Edgewater Senior Satellite Center at the Broadway Armory (5917 N Broadway) is open Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm hosting activites and providing resources. Lunch is served daily at 11:30am.

Did you know that Leni is an AARP member? AARP is a nonprofit organization that advocates for the well-being of Americans 50 and older, offering advocacy, information, education, and other resources to support older adults. You can become a member as soon as you turn 50.

CONSTRUCTION

Ridge Closed Due to $9 Million Sewer Main Replacement

Last week, Ridge was closed to through traffic between Ashland and Broadway due to the ongoing $9 million sewer replacement project. We knew this critical infrastructure project would be disruptive as we detoured cars to Devon and Foster. However, what we experienced last week was a dangerous environment of vehicles speeding through our residential streets. We have been working with the media to get the word out beyond our ward about the Ridge closure, to remind commuters that we live here, and to encourage drivers to follow the detour routes on Devon and Foster. We collaborated with CDOT and DWM to increase signage and closures in order to address the dangerous vehicle behavior. Some of the changes include:

Added a left turn lane closure on Northbound Broadway and W Hollywood Ave intersection.
Added additional road closed signs on westbound W Hollywood Ave
Added additional road closed signage on N Ridge Ave south of N Clark St.

We are now seeing a 75% decrease in the traffic on our residential streets. Please continue to report concerns to our office. Closures on Ridge are expected through August.

It's Construction Season!

Summer is construction season: when the city invests in our community's infrastruture and puts our tax dollars to work! There are lots of exciting projects and improvements scheduled for this summer. Be sure to look out for road closures and parking restrictions near upcoming construction. Visit our blog to see a Spring Construction Map. 1353 W Devon - Zoning Change Decision

After careful consideration, Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth has decided not to support the zoning change request for 1353 W Devon due to its incompatibility with the long-term vision of the Elevate Devon Corridor Plan. Learn more about this decision on our blog.

Development Update: 5356 N Sheridan

Work has started at 5356 N Sheridan on a 50-unit residential building at the site of the former Wing Hoe Restaurant. The plans for this development were approved by City Council back in 2019 after a community engagement process took place, but construction never started. The stalled project changed hands in 2024 from Tempus Real Estate Group to Newline Development. Newline Development is moving forward with the 2019 plan and is currently excavating to pour the foundation. In April 2024, Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth had the Wing Hoe restaurant building demolished by city crews after the fire-damaged building became a hazard to the community. The new development will include five affordable units on-site, with a makeup of 3 one-beds and 2 two-beds, all targets for those making up to 60% AMI.

Development Update: 907 W Argyle

This week in City Council, the Department of Housing introduced an ordinance to allow for the sale and transfer of the San Miguel Apartments located 907 W Argyle to Metropolitan Housing Development Corporation. The San Miguel has served 48th ward residents in need of affordable housing for the past 31 years as part of the Heartland Alliance portfolio that is currently under the control of a receiver and at risk of collapse. Preserving and investing in housing like the San Miguel is a priority for the 48th ward office, and Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth has been involved in the negotiations to preserve deep affordability at the San Miguel while increasing the quality of life for residents, and ensuring a financial model that is sustainable for years to come. Development Update: 6347 N Broadway

Loyola University will be starting construction on their building at 6347 N Broadway this spring. The adaptive re-use project will serve university functions with classrooms, offices, and maintenance operations. The building will open in August 2026 and will serve 300-400 students and staff throughout the day bringing foot traffic to Broadway. Beginning May 26th portions of the alley will be closed for work on the fire escape. For safety reasons, a sidewalk canopy will be installed in early June and will remain on site through December 2025. Utility connections to lines on Broadway and the alley will be completed in summer 2025.

The Resurrection Project, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, the National Immigrant Justice Center, the Chicago Mayor’s Office of Immigrant, Migrant and Refugee Rights, and the Illinois Department of Human Services are proud to launch a new website with centralized resources for immigrant families across the state!

Free Seizure First Aid Training

Learn to recognize seizures and respond when someone is experiencing a seizure. This course aims to increase the knowledge, skill, and confidence in applying seizure first aid. The first aid procedures in the guide reflects the standard of knowledge and current best practices. This information is presented in a format suited for direct training of the public. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a two-year certification.

CCPSA is Seeking Traffic Stop Policy Feedback

The Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability (CCPSA), the Chicago Police Department (CPD), and the Illinois Office of the Attorney General (OAG) are working together to develop a CPD policy on traffic stops and they want to hear from you! WHERE IN THE WARD IS LENI?

On Monday, Leni and City Hall colleagues cut the tape to celebrate one year of progress in reforming outdated policies, streamlining development approvals, and increasing transparency and trust through the Cut the Tape initiative.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

Since 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been a driving force in addressing the challenges faced by millions of Americans living with mental health conditions. It's an opportunity for us to come together and share community resources, listen to each others' stories, and work together to reduce mental health stigma.

In the 48th ward, we want everyone to be able to access the mental health care and support that they need which is why we work with groups like Trilogy, Thresholds and DFSS outreach teams to provide direct, daily support to our neighbors. However, we also recognize that mental health resources need to be supported through policy, which is why I’ve continually advocated for initiatives like Treatment Not Trauma (CARE) and budgetary allocations for mental health services at City Hall.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues or experiencing a mental health crisis, help is available. For immediate support, dial 9-8-8 or the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) local helpline: (833) 626-4244. Visit our blog for additional Mental Health Awareness Month resources.

NEIGHBORHOOD SERVICES

Two Years of Good Work

May 15 marked two full years since Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth’s inauguration day! Here are just a few of the things we accomplished together in that time:

We completed 31,403 city service requests, a 24% increase from the two previous years.
We developed and implemented the Safe48 plan; violent crime is down 23% and robberies are down 35% from this time last year.
Leni passed Green Social Housing along with 200+ other ordinances, resolutions, and orders including Cut the Red Tape, One Fair Wage, ADU Expansion, and Chi v. Hate.
We introduced Participatory Budgeting to the 48th ward. Neighbors decided how to spend $2 million in their own tax-payer dollars.
Leni and her colleagues passed a balanced city budget without raising property taxes and while expanding Treatment not Trauma and reestablishing the Department of the Environment.
We planned over 150 affordable housing units.
We hosted over 110 community events, meetings, and resource fairs.
We housed 70 neighbors.

Thank you to our Zoning Advisory Council, Youth Advsory Council, Green Council, Bryn Mawr Alliance, and everyone else in the 48th ward who worked with us these past two years to help us achieve all this and more. We look forward to continuing to work with all of you in year three!

The City of Chicago, in partnership with the Department of Finance (DOF), has launched two new Q2 2025 amnesty programs to provide real financial relief for motorists and businesses. After all, development takes decades, not days. When you think about Broadway decades from now, what do you see? Draw a picture of Your Broadway and submit it to our competition!

Low Affordability Community (LAC) Designation Ordinance

To respond to the community’s need for more housing and especially more affordable housing in the 48th ward, Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth is introducing an ordinance to designate the 48th ward as a Low Affordability Community (LAC). The LAC designation is a state tax incentive program that works together with Chicago’s affordable housing requirements (ARO) to build right-sized, mixed-income housing for the 48th ward community. The purpose of the LAC designation is to provide incentives to build affordable housing in communities that need it. Learn more on our blog.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is warning Illinoisans to keep on the lookout for text message scams claiming to be from the “Illinois State Department of Motor Vehicles” that threaten to suspend vehicle registration and driving privileges. The text messages are phishing attempts designed to trick residents into giving up personal or financial information. Recipients should not respond or open any links found in unsolicited texts and emails. Report scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting reportfraud.ftc.gov

$9 million Sewer Main & Lead Service Line Replacement - Update

The Department of Water Management (DWM) is working on an $9 million sewer main and lead service replacement project in the ward! Please review the following updates:

In the coming weeks, the DWM in-house sewer crew will continue installing catch basins on the 1300 block of Hollywood and then will start installing pipes at the 1400 block of Hollywood going west from Glenwood.
Hollywood will remain shut down from Glenwood east to Ridge and will be open to local traffic only after working hours. Hollywood will also remain shut down going west from Glenwood to Clark. No parking signs have been posted.

Ridge Closed Due to $9 Million Sewer Main Replacement

Earlier this month, Ridge was closed to through traffic between Ashland and Broadway due to the ongoing $9 million sewer replacement project. We have continued working with the media to get the word out beyond our ward about the Ridge closure, to remind commuters that we live here, and to encourage drivers to follow the detour routes on Devon and Foster. We collaborated with CDOT and DWM to increase signage and closures in order to address the dangerous vehicle behavior. Some of the changes implemented last week include:

Added a left turn lane closure on Northbound Broadway and W Hollywood Ave intersection.
Added additional road closed signs on westbound W Hollywood Ave
Added additional road closed signage on N Ridge Ave south of N Clark St.

We are now seeing a 75% decrease in the traffic on our residential streets. Please continue to report concerns to our office. Closures on Ridge are expected through August.

Last week, Leni stopped by Jeni's in Andersonville to celebrate Jubilee's retirement! Jubilee is a corn snake whom recently retired from life as an educational pet for Chicagoland Exotic Animal Rescue (CLEAR) before being adopted by 48th ward communications manager Audrey.

Leni joined Sen. Dick Durbin for an Education Roundtable with Loyola at Senn Highschool last week. Loyola was one of 20 applicants in 2023 to receive a five year grant to support civic education in our high schools and middle schools, so they brought together elected officials, museum partners, community partners, and teachers to speak with students about civic engagement.

Leni, Agnes, and Conor attended the Edgewater Chamber Annual Meeting. Congratulations to the outgoing and retiring Board members, and welcome to the slate of new Board members and officers!

CELEBRATING PRIDE MONTH 2025

Happy Pride Month 48th Ward! From the Stonewall riots of 1969 which were led by Black Trans women, to the legalization of gay marriage in 2015, to everything else in between and beyond, Pride has been a celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community, and a protest against anyone who would have us keep our true colors hidden.

Now more than ever, it's important that we come together in community and solidarity in the face of an federal administration that is actively dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion. They would like to see decades of LGBTQIA+ progress undone; we will continue working to see it protected and carried forward for future generations. As the first queer Filipina to serve on the Chicago City Council, I'm honored to celebrate Pride 2025 with you as your alderwoman. I look forward to continuing our work to protect and uplift our most vulnerable neighbors.

Peirce Pride Parade

We kicked off Pride Month at Peirce for the first-annual Peirce Pride Parade! It was a joyous celebration of love and community.

Daley Plaza Pride Flag Raising Ceremony

Leni and the rest of the LGBT Caucus raised the pride flag together in Daley Plaza on Monday! Chicago City Council is proud to be the gayest City Council in America.

Pokémon & Pride Trans Youth Resource Fair

When: Friday, June 20 from 5-7pm

Join our office as well as other elected officials and community organizations at the upcoming Pokémon & Pride Trans Youth Resource Fair! TIME EXTENDED: Emissions Testing

The Federal Clean Air Act requires most gasoline-fueled vehicles more than four years old to get an emissions test every two years. Due for a smog check? Come by the Ismaili Jaamtkhana parking lot for free emissions testing. Note that the time for this event has been extended and will now run from 9am-3pm!

Resources for a Safe & Healthy Summer

Local schools, libraries, parks, and other organizations are coming together to provide a wide variety of ways for young people to stay active and engaged this summer from camps, to free lunches, to mental health supports, and more. Visit our blog for the full summer 2025 youth resource guide.

Chicago's Violent Crime Down 21% Citywide Since Last Year

Violent crime is trending downward in the 48th ward and across the city. Since last year:

Violent Crime is down 21%
Homicides are down 25%
Shootings are down 33%
Robberies are down 35%

Month-to-date numbers are even higher with violent crime down 23% and homicides down 31%. Here in the 48th Ward, robberies are down 42% and violent crime is down 17%. This Memorial Day Weekend was the safest we have seen over the past 16 years. You can find these statistics and more on the Violence Reduction Dashboard.

Public safety is our office's top priority. Our Safe 48 Health and Safety Plan focuses on coordination and collaboration across government agencies, local organizations, and neighbors to forge relationships which makes our communities safer. Our office has built a network of responsive community stakeholders to respond to violent incidents and connect at-risk neighbors to resources quickly. Thank you to everyone across the 48th ward who has worked with us for a safer, more vibrant 48th ward. We look forward to continuing our work with you this summer.

Saddle & Cycle Club Fireworks Display

The 48th ward office has provided a letter of support for Pyrotecnico to conduct a professional fireworks display at Saddle & Cycle Club on Saturday, June 7 at 7:30pm and 9:30pm. Please be advised of loud noises in the area at that time.

Apply for Camp Courage: Empowering Future Firefighters

The Chicago Fire Department is proud to announce the return of Camp Courage, a three-day summer camp program running June 23 - July 30 at six locations across the city. This exciting initiative offers young participants a unique opportunity to explore careers in firefighting and emergency medical services (EMS) through engaging, hands-on activities including:

Fire safety and EMS procedures
CPR and basic life support
Fitness and team-building exercises
Mentorship from CFD professionals

CCHR: Standing Strong, Defending Equality

No matter what shifts may occur at the national level, the Chicago Commission on Human Relations' local commitment to fairness, dignity, and justice has not changed. CCHR continues to investigate complaints, enforce the City’s Human Rights and Fair Housing Ordinances, and promote equity for all who experience discrimination in Chicago.

If you believe you have experienced discrimination in housing, employment, public accommodations, bonding, or credit transactions, CCHR staff is available to listen, provide information, and help guide you through the process of filing a complaint. They have language interpretation and ASL services that can be provided at no cost.

The 48th ward office will be closed on Thursday, June 19 for Juneteenth. While we are away, please contact 311 for non-emergency requests. In the case of an emergency, contact 911. See the full list of City of Chicago holidays here. We also include these closures on our community calendar.

Garbage Collection Schedule
During the holidays, garbage collection schedules may shift by 24-48 hours. During weeks with city holidays, put your bins out 24 hours ahead of your scheduled pick up day to avoid delays.

Night Out in the 48th Ward Parks

Night Out in the Parks activates parks across the city with robust cultural events – bringing neighbors together to laugh, dance, sing, and engage. Through theater, music, movies, dance, site-specific performances, and nature programs, the series supports Chicago-based artists, facilitates community-based partnerships and programs, cultivates civic engagement, and ensures equity in access to the arts for all Chicagoans. 311 is a valable resource that allows you to request, track, and explore the City of Chicago's non-emergency services. Seeking a non-emergency service such as emergency tree trimming, pothole repair, street light replacement, rodent control etc? We encourage you to file a request through 311 with pictures and specific location details. Feel free to contact our office and share the tracking number with us so we can help you follow up! As we've been experiencing more damp and rainy weather, these are some requests we encourge you to file when necessary:

Sewer Cleaning Inspection: Neighbors are responsible for clearing leaves and other debris from catch basins to avoid water collecting in the street. If you notice that a catch basin is too clogged for you to clear yourself, submit a cleaning request.
Weed Removal: If you notice weeds sprouting up in the public way (streets or sidewalks) submity a request to have them removed
Tree Emergency: If you encounter a tree emergency, such as a fallen or hanging tree limb that is blocking the public way or obstructing traffic, report it to 311 to have it cleared. Please note that DSS is currently responding to many of these requests which have come in since recent storms

In collaboration with the Chicago park Disrtict, we have addressed darinage concerns at the Bryn Mawr Dog Friendly Area. The scope of the work included:

New entrance
Improved grading and drainage to alleviate mud and overflow onto the southern sidewalk
Drainage improvements inside the dog friendly area to capture runoff
Resuracing of the emergency vehicle ramp and part of the sidewalk

Summer is construction season: when the city invests in our community's infrastruture and puts our tax dollars to work! There are lots of exciting projects and improvements scheduled for this summer. New Speed Hump Design for Greenways

CDOT has adopted an improved design for all greenway speed humps, including those along Glenwood. The new greenway speed humps are "sinusoidal" type meaning they have a gently slope up from the road and a curved top rather than a flat one, making them easier for people with bikes, scooters and other mobility devices to pass over. The improved design has been well received on other recent greenway projects by all roadway users. The streets on Glenwood that are being resurfaced will have these new greenway speed humps put in place for a smoother and safer ride for all users.

Ridge Closed Due to $9 Million Sewer Main Replacement

Earlier this month, Ridge was closed to through traffic between Ashland and Broadway due to the ongoing $9 million sewer replacement project. We have continued working with the media to get the word out beyond our ward about the Ridge closure, to remind commuters that we live here, and to encourage drivers to follow the detour routes on Devon and Foster.

On June 2, Stage 2 of the project began resulting in the following traffic changes (see updateed graphic above):

Northbound traffic is detoured North on Broadway to Devon, then West on Devon to Clark, then South on Clark back to Ridge (Red lines/arrows)
Southbound traffic is detoured South on Clark then East on Foster, then North on Broadway back to Ridge (Blue lines/arrows)
With the full closure of Ridge between Magnolia and Glenwood, there is local traffic permitted on Ridge between Glenwood and Clark, and between Broadway and Magnolia.
Westbound $84 Peterson buses are rerouted to Devon, while Eastbound buses are rerouted to Foster.

Commuters can expect closures along Ridge through August. See full closure timeline and bus reroute details on our blog.

WHERE IN THE WARD IS LENI?

Governor JB Pritzker met with small business owners along Argyle in the 48th ward. We're proud to collaborate with our state governor, senators, and representatives to bring state resources to our residents.

Leni joined the Friends of the Edgewater Library, Edgewater Branch Manager Joanna Hazelden, and Chicago Public LIbrary Commissioner Chris Brown in cutting the ribbon on the new mural outside the library building! DCASE brought the party with food, music, and a special performance by a Taiko drummer!

Congratulations to Edgewater Glen on their new National Historic District status! Leni and Agnes stopped by their neighborhood-wide block party to celebrate and see the unveiling of the new streetlight signage.

The Edgewater Monday Market kicked off this week! Be sure to stop by the only monday market in the city featuring local vendors, musicians, and a chef's table with demonstrations and samples!

Conor volunteers at Misericordia Heart of Mercy, a disability-care organization that his family has been involved with for decades, way before his birth. A number of 48th ward residents and families are part of the Misericordia family, and we're lucky to have this community treasure nearby!

NEW CTA STATIONS OPENING IN JULY

Dear Neighbors,
After four long years of construction noise, road closures, and alley closures, I am thrilled to announce that the new, fully ADA accessible Red Line stations at Bryn Mawr, Berwyn, Argyle, and Lawrence will be opening by the end of July! The new station highlights include:

Larger stations; modern amenities
ADA accessibility
Better lighting and security features
Real-time information boards
Reliable train serve; Fewer delays
Decreased crowding on trains and platforms
Brighter, cleaner pedestrian environment

We will be celebrating the station openings BIG and everyone is invited! Stay tuned for details to come. Each of the stations will feature eye-catching, colorful art and designs that reflect the local neighborhoods around the stations.

Following the station openings, work will begin on the Under-L spaces. After an extensive community visioning process, we’ll be adding two dog parks, a playground, a workout area, and plazas to the space under the tracks that was opened up with the removal of the 100 year old embankment. These community spaces will open in 2026. I look forward to seeing you all at one of the new Red Line stations very soon!

CONSTRUCTION

Granville Construction Begins Next Week

Construction for the Granvile Traffic Safety Project is scheduled to begin next week. Please follow posted detour routes for a road closure on Granville just north of the Glenwood intersection where CDOT crews will be installing a raised crosswalk to help slow traffic near Northside Catholic Academy where many children walk to and from school. Continuous north and south traffic will be maintained on Glenwood at this intersection. The official detour route (see map above) is as follows:

Eastbound traffic: Turn left off of Granville and go north on Clark, turn right to go east on Devon, turn right to go south on Broadway, turn left to go east on Granville
Westbound traffic: Turn right off of Granville to go north on Broadway, turn left to go west on Devon, turn left to go south on Clark, turn right to go west on Granville.

Weather permitting, construction is expected to be completed before CPS schools open in the fall. In addition to regular updates in our newsletter and blog, our office will be communicating with neighboring schools, faith institutions, and block clubs to keep the community updated on this project. $9 million Sewer Main & Lead Service Line Replacement

The Department of Water Management (DWM) is working on a $9 million sewer main and lead service replacement project in the ward! Please review the following updates.

Project Updates:

Installation of sewer main, pipes, and catch basins are in progress on Hollywood west of Glenwood.
Sewer main work will continue at the intersection of Hollywood and Ridge, and move southeast towards Magnolia.

Traffic Updates:

The official project detour routes are Devon and Foster. We are collaborating with CDOT and DWM to increase signage and closures in order to address the dangerous vehicle behavior on our residential streets.
Some of the changes implemented include:
- Added a left turn lane closure on northbound Broadway at Bryn Mawr
- Added a left turn closure on southbound Clark at Ridge
- Added additional detour signage throughout the project (there are over 100 signs)
- Created a one-way west-bound on Ardmore between Glenwood and Ridge
Some additional changes coming soon include:
- Full closure of Ardmore at Ridge in place of the one-way. Full closure of southbound Ridge at Ardmore.
- Additional detour signage at Clark/Bryn Mawr and Ashland/Bryn Mawr directing vehicles to Foster.
- Addition of "Devon and Foster" to the Changeable Message Board on Peterson and Hermitage to direct drivers to both detour routes
- Additional "Road Closed" sign and “Detour” sign at Elmdale and Clark

Low Affordability Community Designation Order Passes Committee

Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth's ordinance to designate the 48th ward as a Low Affordability Community (LAC) passed through the Committee on Housing & Real Estate on June 11 and will go to City Council on June 18. The LAC designation is a state tax incentive program that works together with Chicago’s affordable housing requirements (ARO) to encourage the development of mixed-income housing. The purpose of the LAC designation is to provide incentives to build affordable housing in communities that need it most. Read more here.

SBIF Applications Open July 1

Starting July 1, businesses located in the Lawrence/Broadway TIF district can apply for a Small Business Improvement Fund (SBIF) grant to repair their commercial or industrial property. Register for the July 2 informational webinar to learn more.

The waitlist for the affordable units at 5853 N Broadway is not open yet, but the waitlists for four other affordable Bickerdike properties open starting June 16th. The units are located in the Humboldt Park, Logan Square and West Town neighborhoods. Interested applicants should submit a pre-application on-line here. Call to Landlords: Partner with All Chicago to Fill Empty Units

All Chicago is a nonprofit organization that that partners with local, state, and federal agencies to accomplish our shared goal of ending homelessness. They offer targeted emergency funds to fill gaps and work with community partners across the city that help diverse populations. The City of Chicago works with All Chicago to match our unhoused neighbors with housing during Accelerated Moving Events (AMEs). Landlords in the area are encouraged to register with All Chicago to help us increase the rapid rehousing supply on the city's north side, which is currently lacking in available units for vulnerable populations.

When we help connect our neighbors to housing, we want them to be able to stay right here in our community. Connect with All Chicago to help us make that goal a reality.

CDOT Update: Reporting & Regulations for Lime Scooters & Divvy

CDOT has shared the following updates regarding Lime and Divvy scooter regulations and issues reporting to help our office better understand what they are doing to keep the public way clear and reduce micromobility clutter.

Residents and ward offices can call 311 or submit a request to move a Lime or Divvy scooter: Once a request is submitted, improperly parked scooters must be addressed within 2 hours during operating hours, or by 7am if reported overnight.
Scooter riders must ensure devices are deployed upright, at least 6 feet from public way obstacles, and not blocking building access, fire hydrants, bus stops, or loading zones. Users must lock Lime scooters and Divvy e-devices to an approved fixed object (e.g., rack, retired meter, street sign, or light pole).
Lime will soon be required to implement sidewalk riding detection and parking technology to ensure riders are using these devices correctly. Divvy already has these safeguards in place.

Another Edgewater Yard Sale for the books! Thanks to the over 200 households, group sites, and businesses that participated to support Care for Real.

Leni's Door-to-Door Business Tour continues! This week, she popped into a few places along Bryn Mawr including Edgewater Candles and Solar Intentions, pictured above.

Since the beginning of 2025, Leni has been visiting 48th ward businesses to meet their owners and share resources related to grants, public safety, zoning & development, and more! NEW CTA STATIONS OPEN JULY 20!

In 2020, CTA began the ambitious and historic journey to modernize our 100-year-old stations and elevated tracks to improve service, invest in our community, and generate inclusive economic growth across our city.

We are thrilled to announce that the brand-new Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr stations will open on Sunday, July 20, 2025!

These new stations are designed to serve our community better, with modern amenities including full ADA accessibility, escalators, elevators, wider platforms, enhanced lighting and security and real-time travel Information displays. And with the newly rebuilt Red Line elevated track now in service, you'll experience smoother, faster and more reliable rail service. Read more about the new stations in CTA’s press release here.

This is more than a station opening — it’s a celebration of progress and community. We’re proud to support the modernization of the Red and Purple lines and grateful to everyone who’s been part of this journey. We got here together. Chicago Park District Pools Open June 21

The Chicago Park District manages 50 outdoor pools, 27 indoor pools and works with Chicago Public Schools to operate school pools for community use in areas without a park pool. Most pools have accessibility features such as ADA stairs, pool lifts, and zero-depth entry. At a few locations with pool lifts, direct wheelchair access to the pool area may still be limited. Teens in the Parks - Events and Opportunities

The Chicago Park District has organized over 70 free events for teens across the city this summer! Whether you're interested in exciting events, volunteer opportunities, or a chill spot to hang out with friends, the parks have what you’re looking for. Search for opportunities online here.

Senn Free Summer Arts Workshop

The Senn Summer Arts Workshop is an opportunity for rising 7th and 8th grade students to create, build performance skills, and develop their artistic abilities over the summer. The workshop runs from July 14-25 from 9am-12pm at Senn High School. The workshop is free of charge! Register online.

Join the Ainslie Winmore Block Club!

The Ainslie Winmore Block Club now stretches up to Argyle encompassing part of the 48th ward! Neighbors on and around Arglye who want to get involved with community events, beautification projects, and local safety efforts are encouraged to join. Mark your calendars for August 2 for the Ainslie Winmore block party featuring a bouncy house, games, music, face painting, food, and more!

The City of Chicago is hosting three budget engagement roundtables to provide residents an overview of the proposed budget and an opporutnity to share insights and ask questions about the City's priorities.

311 is a valable resource that allows you to request, track, and explore the City of Chicago's non-emergency services. Seeking a non-emergency service such as emergency tree trimming, pothole repair, street light replacement, rodent control, etc? We encourage you to file a request through 311 with pictures and specific location details. Feel free to contact our office and share the tracking number with us so we can help you follow up! As the weather heats up, these are some requests we encourge you to file when necessary:

No Air Conditioning: In many cases, landlords are required to provide air conditioning when during high temperatures. If your landlord is not fulfilling this requirement, submit a "no air conditioning" request.
Senior Well-Being Check Request: You may request a senior well-being check from the Department of Family and Support Services, especially for older adults living alone or without external support systems. We encourage you to file these requests any time you believe one of our neighbors may be at risk, especially during heat waves.

The City of Chicago wants to work together with community to improve the outcomes for the transgender community. In December 2024, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order to establish a Transfemicide Working Group. Join the Chicago Commmission on Human Relations at an upcoming community meeting to share your feedback on that executive order and discuss the current needs of the transgender community.

ONE Northside Endorses Broadway Land Use Framework

ONE Northside’s members and volunteers have voted to endorse the Broadway Land Use Framework, determining that the vision aligns with their longstanding housing justice priorities—which include increasing the amount of deeply affordable housing, preserving existing affordable housing, and increasing renter protections. Visit our Broadway Land Use FAQ page to learn more and to see a full list of the community organizations that have endorsed the framework. The Broadway Land Use zoning ordinances will be on the agenda of the July Zoning Committee meeting.

907 W Argyle (San Miguel Apartments) Ordinance Passes Committee

The Department of Housing ordinance to allow for the sale and transfer of the San Miguel Apartments at 907 W Argyle to the Metropolitan Housing Development Corporation passed through committee this week! Next, the ordinance will go before the full council. Preserving and investing in housing like the San Miguel is a priority for the 48th ward office and the Alderwoman championed this ordinance. 5255-5259 N Clark: Zoning Change Decision

After careful consideration, Alderwoman Manaa-Hoppenworth has decided to approve the zoning change request for 5255-5259 N Clark (Devil Dawgs & Heisler Hospitality). Read more on our blog.

New Chicago Labor Laws Go Into Effect on July 1

Effective July 1, the Chicago minimum wage for employers with 4 or more employees will be $16.60 per hour, while the tipped employee minimum wage will be $12.62 per hour. For youth workers, subsidized temporary youth employment programs, and subsidized transitional employment programs, the minimum wage will be $16.50 per hour. Fair Workweek compensation ceilings will also increase on July 1, 2025. Covered Employees who earn equal to or less than $62,561.90 (salary) or $32.60 (hourly) will be covered by the ordinance. TimeLine Theatre is Seeking Community Co-Designers

TimeLine invites folks who live, work and/or go to school in Uptown to join them as Community Co-Designers. Community Co-Designers will take part in two collaborative workshops as part of TimeLine's effort to build a strategic roadmap that reflects community priorities and supports sustainable impact in Uptown. The workshops will take place on Tuesday, July 8 and Thursday, July 24 from 5:30-7:30pm; folks are welcome to join both or either! Granville Construction Begins This Week

Construction for the Granvile Traffic Safety Project is scheduled to begin this week. Please follow posted detour routes for a road closure on Granville just west of the Glenwood intersection where CDOT crews will be installing a raised crosswalk to help slow traffic near Northside Catholic Academy where many children walk to and from school. Continuous north and south traffic will be maintained on Glenwood at this intersection. See full details on our blog.

$9 million Sewer Main & Lead Service Line Replacement

The Department of Water Management (DWM) is working on a $9 million sewer main and lead service replacement project in the ward! Please review the following updates.

Project Updates:

Installation of sewer main, pipes, and catch basins are in progress on Hollywood west of Glenwood.
Sewer main work will continue at the intersection of Hollywood and Ridge, and move southeast towards Magnolia.

Traffic Updates:

The official project detour routes are Devon and Foster. We are collaborating with CDOT and DWM to increase signage and closures in order to address the dangerous vehicle behavior on our residential streets.
Some of the changes implemented include:
- Added a left turn lane closure on northbound Broadway at Bryn Mawr
- Added a left turn closure on southbound Clark at Ridge
- Added additional detour signage throughout the project (there are over 100 signs)
- Created a one-way west-bound on Ardmore between Glenwood and Ridge

- Adding a left turn left closure on southbound Clark at Bryn Mawr.
- Adding a left turn closure on southbound Clark at Ashland.
- Adding a left turn left closure on southbound Ashland at Balmoral.
- Adding a left turn closure on southbound Clark at Balmoral.
- Changing all traffic lights along Ridge to flashing red.
- Addition of "Devon and Foster" to the Changeable Message Board on Ridge and Hermitage to direct drivers to both detour routes
- Additional "Road Closed" sign and “Detour” sign at Elmdale and Clark

WHERE IN THE WARD IS LENI?

Here's to another successful and sunny Midsommarfest! Thanks to all of the people and organizations that come together each year to make this event great, and congratulations to the women in businesses who received Kurt Mathiasson Awards during the opening ceremonies on Saturday. The Kurt Mathiasson is named in honor of the founder of the Swedish American Museum, a devoted advocate for Andersonville, and it celebrates individuals and groups dedicated to the ongoing vitality of the Andersonville community. This year's awardees include:

We were so excited to bring the first ever vehicle emissions testing event to the ward! The Federal Clean Air Act requires most gasoline-fueled vehicles more than four years old to get an emissions test every two years but the nearest permanent testing sites are miles outside the ward. Over the weekend, nearly 50 cars came and got their smog tests right on Broadway at the Ismaili Jamatkhana. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future.

Our neighbors on Sheridan came out in solidarity for a local No Kings Day protest over the weekend! The 48th ward is a welcoming ward where we fight for our democracy and work to protect the rights and liberties of everyone in our community.
