The last Saturday in April is National Dueling Dinosaurs Day on the National Day Calendar. Prepare to take a journey of discovery into the exciting world of the Tyrannosaur and Triceratops dinosaurs and the best dinosaur discovery to date.

In 2006, Clayton Phipps, a Montana rancher, and his associates discovered two amazing dinosaur fossils in the late Cretaceous sediments of the Hell Creek formation. The dinosaurs appeared to be in the final stage of a battle between a Tyrannosaur and a Triceratops that took place around 67 million years ago.

April 27th Celebrated History

1865

The worst maritime disaster in United States history occurred on the Mississippi River just north of Marion, Arkansas. Greater than the Titanic disaster, the Sultana steamboat exploded just weeks after the end of the Civil War and the assassination of President Lincoln. Overloaded with POWs returning to the North, over 1800 passengers perished.

1937

After premieres in Los Angeles and New York, A Star is Born opens across the United States. Starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, the film follows a young woman's dream of Hollywood stardom. The film's popularity lends itself to four remakes. The first, a television adaptation, starred Kathleen Crowley and Conrad Nagel. Then in 1954, crooner Judy Garland and James Mason put on performances that many consider to be unstoppable. Some even suggest that Garland's performance is the best of her career. Then in 1976, Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson take up the challenge. Garland, Mason, Streisand, and Kristofferson all won Golden Globes for their performances. The most recent version of a Star is Born came out in 2018 starring Grammy winner Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. The film won the Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.

Ulysses S. Grant - 1822

The 18th president of the United States served as the commanding general of the Union Armies during the American Civil War. The youngest president the country had seen, his two terms from 1869 to 1877 placed him in charge of overseeing much of Reconstruction.

W.H. Carothers - 1896

W.H. Carothers invented nylon and neoprene. As a chemist, his contributions led to breakthroughs led to multiple versatile uses in industry and manufacturing.

Betty Mae Tiger - 1923

Betty Mae Tiger Jumper devoted her entire career to public service. As a nurse, she worked to improve the health and conditions in the Seminole community. In 1967, Tiger Jumper was elected the first woman tribal leader of the Florida Seminoles and the first woman to lead a federally recognized tribe. In 1971, she left office to carry on the publishing of the Seminole Tribune which Tiger Jumper launched in 1950.

Coretta Scott King - 1927

During the Civil Rights Movement, Coretta Scott King worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Following his death, she earned a reputation as a leader in her own right.

April 28th Celebrated History

1952

The official end of Allied occupation in Japan took place according to the Treaty of San Francisco, or the Treaty of Peace with Japan signed seven months prior. Signed by 49 countries, including the United States and Japan, the treaty restored full sovereignty to Japan on this date. While Nationalist China signed the treaty, neither Red China nor Russia did. Both were still considered at war with the island country.

1955

Helicopter pilot Jean Ross Howard Phelan founded the Whirly-Girls organization along with 13 international charter members. While training at Bell Helicopter School in Fort Worth, Texas, Lawrence Bell nicknamed Ross Howard Phelan a "whirly-girl" inspiring her to use the name for the organization. In the organization's more than six decades, it has promoted the advancement of women helicopter pilots, charitable aviation, mentoring, scholarship and camaraderie.

1992

Agriculture Secretary Edward Madigan revealed the USDA's Food Guide Pyramid. The new guide illustrated the food groups in a hierarchy of recommended servings. It replaced the previous design called the "Food Wheel."

2001

For the budget-friendly price tag of $20 million, American businessman Dennis Tito hitched a ride aboard a Russian supply mission to the International Space Station. His six-day round trip is considered the first of a space tourist.

James Monroe - 1758

During the fifth president's administration, the young country began facing the moral dilemma of slavery for the first time. The Missouri Compromise allowed Missouri to enter the union as a slave state and Maine as a free state. It also restricted slavery north and west of Missouri, setting the stage for future division. Monroe was also the last of the Founding Fathers to be elected to the presidency.

Erich Salomon - 1914

The German photographer was known for capturing photos of notable figures and events. He is considered one of the founding fathers of modern photojournalism.

Harper Lee - 1926

Best known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), Harper Lee later accepted a post at the National Council of the Arts. While Mockingbird brought celebrity and wealth to Lee, she didn’t publish another novel until 2015. Originally written in 1957, Go Set a Watchman follows up on the main characters in Mockingbird.

Jay Leno - 1950

In 1992, the American comedian became the host of NBC's The Tonight Show. He hosted the show for 17 years. Also a known car geek, he also hosts the television show Jay Leno's Garage.

While over 7,000 living organ transplants were performed in 2024, the need remains critical, as 17 people die every day waiting for a transplant.

The Inaugural Event at the Field of Dreams

To officially launch National Wanna Have A Catch Day, the Living Donor Awareness Softball Game will feature two teams from the Transplant Games of America, Team Iowa vs. Team Wisconsin, competing for the coveted Shoeless Joe Trophy.

Encouraging an active lifestyle to help prevent conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure—leading causes of end-stage liver and kidney disease.
Highlighting the importance of living organ donation, with each toss of a baseball symbolizing the act of giving and receiving the gift of life.
Advocating for legislative support to protect living donors, ensuring they receive necessary financial and legal protections.

How to Celebrate National Wanna Have A Catch Day

Play catch with a loved one and share photos/videos on social media using #WannaHaveACatch.
Participate in Living Donor Awareness Games at the MLB, MiLB, and college baseball levels.
Educate others about living organ donation and advocate for policies supporting living donors.
Stay active to reduce risk factors that may lead to the need for organ transplantation.

Looking Ahead: A Historic Milestone

Each year, National Wanna Have A Catch Day will be celebrated on the second Saturday of May. In 2029, to mark the 40th anniversary of Field of Dreams, organizers hope to bring together Kevin Costner and Dwier Brown for a commemorative catch at the movie site.

1852

Peter Roget publishes Roget's Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases. The work was the result of decades of collecting lists of words and categorizing them, much like a scientist would collect specimens. The thesaurus was more than a book of synonyms – it was a complete categorization and organization of each word by meaning.

1925

The U.S. National Academy of Sciences elects the first woman, Dr. Florence Rena Sabin to the academy. Dr. Sabin of Baltimore, Maryland was a pioneer in histology and also held the first full professorship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

1986

Roger Clemens strikes out twenty batters in a 9-inning game. He's the first Major League pitcher to accomplish this milestone. The right-hander achieved the record in a 3-1 win for the Red Sox over the Seattle Mariners. Steve Carlton of the St. Louis Cardinals held the previous record of 19 strikeouts set in 1969.

William Randolph Hearst - 1863

Known for heading up the rivalry between two New York papers that created yellow journalism, William Randolph Hearst’s drive for sensational headlines carried beyond the ink. He also owned newsreel and movie production companies. Much to Hearst’s displeasure, in 1941, Orson Welles released Citizen Kane, a fictionalized biography of Hearst's life.

Duke Ellington - 1899

The award-winning composer is known as one of the best jazz pianists of the 20th century. His career spanned more than six decades while leading jazz orchestras, playing in big bands, and earning 13 Grammy Awards.

Willie Nelson - 1933

Willie Nelson’s music spans more than five decades. From "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" and "Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" to well-received acting performances, Nelson had a reputation as an outlaw country musician while raising money for Farm Aid and other charitable causes.

Andre Agassi - 1970

Isiah Thomas - 1961

The 2-time All-Star American point guard played 13 years in the National Basketball Association. During his career, Thomas set several Piston's records, including scoring, assists, and steals. In 2000, he was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

May 1st Celebrated History

1840

The United Kingdom issued the world’s first adhesive postage stamp called the Penny Black. Sir Rowland Hill first proposed the idea back in 1837 as part of postal reform. At the time, the receiver bore the cost of postage upon delivery, and it could be costly depending on weight and the distance traveled. Fraud was also rampant. The Penny Black cost only a penny (as the name suggests) and the sender paid for the postage at the time of sending. The Penny Black featured a profile image of Queen Victoria. Soon, the idea of pre-paid postage spread around the world and across the pond to the United States.

1884

Catcher Moses Fleetwood Walker makes his major league baseball debut with Toledo of the Association League against Louisville. He is one of the first African Americans to play in the major leagues and when he leaves the league several months later, is the last until Jackie Robinson signs with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.

1941

Orson Welles' award-winning film Citizen Kane premieres in New York City. Welles' also starred alongside Joseph Cotton and Dorothy Comingore in a story that follows the rise and fall of publishing magnate.

1971

Nearly 102 years after the transcontinental railroad was completed, Amtrak begins operation. The National Railroad Passenger Corporation is federally supported and provides intercity passenger train service in the United States.

May 1st Celebrated Birthday

Calamity Jane - 1852

Orphaned at a young age, Martha Jane Cannary grew up to be known as the legendary sharpshooter, Calamity Jane. She earned a notorious reputation in the Wild West of Deadwood, South Dakota, for her drunkenness, lawlessness, and relationships with wanted men, including Wild Bill Hickok. However, most of the stories surrounding her life are unverifiable. Later in her life, she would perform in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in 1893 and in the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York.

Anna Jarvis - 1864

Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother's Day in the United States, created the day to honor and fulfill her own mother's dream. As a result, the day celebrates mothers all over the country and the world.

Scott Carpenter - 1925

A pioneer in space exploration and a member of the Mercury 7 astronauts, Scott Carpenter, became the second American to orbit the Earth. Carpenter left the surface of land behind by being both an astronaut and aquanaut.

Max Robinson - 1939

In 1978, Max Robinson became the first African American broadcast network news anchor when he joined the ABC World News Tonight team.

Judy Collins - 1939

The American singer-songwriter achieved critical success in the 1960s and 70s with hits such as “Both Sides of Now” and “Send in the Clowns.”

Celebrated History on May 2

1885 - The popular periodical Good Housekeeping makes its publishing debut. Its full title was Good Housekeeping Conducted in the Interests of the Higher Life of the Household. (You think some of today's books have long titles!) For the price of $2.50, the advice and scholarly information of Good Housekeeping experts were delivered to households across the country every two weeks. The magazine later changed to a monthly publication.

1908 - Albert Von Tilzer and Jack Norworth register a copyright for "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," a catchy tune that continues to be a tradition during summer baseball games.

1920 - The Negro National League debuted with a doubleheader in Indianapolis, Indiana between C.I. Taylor's Indianapolis ABCs and the Chicago Giants. Taking place at Washington Park, the game hosted 6,000 fans. The home team didn't disappoint, delivering two wins 4-2 and 11-4.

1935 - After nearly 5 years, construction on Boulder Dam is complete. Twelve years later it was renamed Hoover Dam in honor of Herbert Hoover, the nation's 31st president and the secretary of commerce who helped make the project possible.

2021 - At just before 3 AM EST, the space capsule Resilience returned to Earth with four astronauts on board. Resilience splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico near Panama City, Florida. It was the first nighttime splashdown with astronauts since the 1968 splashdown of Apollo 8 astronauts Bill Anders, Frank Borman, and Jim Lovell. The NASA mission led by SpaceX began in November 2020 to take crew members to and from the International Space Station.

May 2nd Celebrated Birthdays

Mary Bowersock Mendenhall was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania in 1813. She delivered 980 babies in Northern Indiana and never lost a mother in her care. She nursed the people in her communities for more than 40 years. Mendenhall lived a long 98 years and was an asset to those she provided her care.

Elijah McCoy (1844) became known as the prolific inventor who patented more than 50 of his inventions during his lifetime. Born in Canada, McCoy focused his efforts on lubricants for steam engines. His life is the focus of Andrew Moodie's play "The Real McCoy" which illustrates how the son of runaway slaves develops a product that no knockoff could replace.

Nannie Helen Boroughs (1879) became a well-known African American suffragist for her belief in education of females. In 1909, she helped the National Baptist Convention to open the National Training School for Women and Girls.

Dr. Benjamin Spock (1903) was an American pediatrician who wrote Baby and Child Care . This indispensable book of the Baby Boom era helped raise generations of children, many of whom are great-grandparents today.

Gray Baker (1925) was known for his UFO investigations. He published the Mothman mystery The Silver Bridge. Barker is best known for his book The Men in Black: The Secret Terror Among Us.

Engelbert Humperdinck (1936) is an unforgettable singer (and not just because of his name) whose ballads have been touching hearts for generations.

May 3rd Celebrated History

1923

Two U.S. Army Air Service pilots complete the first nonstop transcontinental flight. Lt. John A. Macready and Lt. Oakley G. Kelly departed from Roosevelt Field, Long Island in a T-2 transport on May 2nd and landed at Rockwell Field, San Diego on May 3rd. The flight took nearly 27 hours and 2,470 miles to complete.

1933

Nellie Tayloe Ross became the first woman to serve as the director of the United States Mint.

1952

CBS televises the Kentucky Derby for the first time. Hill Gail won the race ridden by Eddie Arcaro with a time of 2:01 3/5. An injury during the race meant that Hill Gail never ran as well again as he did that day.

1979

The first woman to lead the Conservative Party in Great Britain's Parliament, Margaret Thatcher was also the first woman elected to Prime Minister. She would serve three consecutive terms, eventually resigning before the end of her third term.

Jacob Riis - 1849

The Danish-American photojournalist documented the poverty of urban living conditions.

Golda Meir - 1898

In 1948, Golda Meir was one of 37 members of the Moetzet HaAm to sign Israel's Proclamation of Independence. She served in many positions in Israel's government before becoming its prime minister in 1969.

Bing Crosby - 1903

With charisma and talent, Bing Crosby set out to change entertainment forever. As one of radio and screen’s most beloved crooners, Crosby sang his way into the hearts of his fans. His velvet voice earned him numerous roles in musical films and garnered many awards. Setting the stage for performing artists, Crosby became one of the most popular of the 20th century.

William Inge - 1913

William Inge earned a Pulitzer Prize for his play, Picnic. Depicting small-town Kansas and the fears of failure. Inge would write several Broadway plays which would make it to the big screen including Bus Stop, starring Marilyn Monroe.

Sugar Ray Robinson - 1921

The American professional boxer is widely considered one of the world's best boxers in history. With four Golden Gloves and 109 knockouts across 173 wins, Robinson gain international fame during his 25-year career.

James Brown - 1933

Universally known as the "Godfather of Soul," the dynamic American singer-songwriter began his early career with gospel and R&B groups. His flamboyant style, tenacity and talent led him to chart hits. In 1965, Brown won his first Grammy Award for "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" for Best R&B Recording.

1904

Pitching for the Boston Americans, Cy Young completed the first perfect game in modern baseball history. He also pitched a no-hitter, leading the Americans to a 3-0 Boston win.

1961

Aboard the Freedom 7, astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space. He was selected from among seven men in the Mercury space program for the mission.

1969

Moneta Sleet Jr. was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his photo of Coretta Scott King during the funeral of her husband, Martin Luther King Jr., the assassinated civil rights activist. Moneta Sleet Jr. was the first African American photographer awarded the prize.

1973

Secretariat breaks a racing record at Kentucky Derby with a winning time of 1:29 2/5. In the coming months, Jockey Ron Turcotte would ride Secretariat to Triple Crown history, winning the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.

Nellie Bly - 1864

Born Elizabeth Cochran in Cochran Mills, Bly made a name for herself when she went undercover as a mental patient on Blackwell’s Island as an investigative journalist for the New York World. The exposè led to real change in the New York City mental health system. The World also sent Bly on a Jules Verne-style journey around the world, inspired by the author’s novel Around the World in Eighty Days.

Charles Albert Chief Bender - 1884

In 1903, the right-handed pitcher out-pitched Boston's Cy Young for the Philadelphia Athletics wins. He would bring home three World Series Championships and in the 1911 World Series, Bender pitched three complete games.

Blind Willie McTell - 1889

The talented guitarist, blues singer, and composer was an enigma until after his death in 1959. Recording under different names and labels with a variety of artists, Willie Samuel McTell never saw much success during his lifetime. However, he produced assorted sessions across several labels and he performed with unquestionably gifted talent in each genre.

Dorothy Annie Elizabeth Garrod - 1892

The pioneering archaeologist is most noted for her work during the 1930s including excavations in Mount Carmel, Palestine. One important discovery included the first-ever female Neanderthal skeleton outside of Europe.

James Beard - 1903

1851

The United States Patent Office issued the first U.S. patent (No. 8080) for the mechanical refrigerator to American inventor John Gorrie.

1889

The Exposition Universelle opens in Paris with its grand centerpiece, the Eiffel Tower finally on display. Its chief engineer and owner of the company who built the phenomenal tower, Gustave Eiffel, also designed the framework for the Statue of Liberty.

1937

In Lakehurst, New Jersey, the hydrogen-filled dirigible called the Hindenburg burst into flames killing 35 of the 97 passengers. A Navy crewman on the ground also died that day.

1954

British middle-distance runner Roger Bannister breaks the four-minute mile barrier for the first time in human history. He ran the one-mile race in 3 minutes, 59 seconds, 4/10 at Oxford University's Iffley Road Track.

Martin R Delany - 1812

Through his writing, the African American journalist, writer and soldier influenced perceptions on abolition and activism during his lifetime. He was an early supporter of emigration to Africa and wrote the novel Blake; or the Huts of America.

Dr. Sigmund Freud - 1856

The Austrian neurologist is the founder of psychoanalysis. During his career, Freud developed theories about the parts of human personality called the id, ego and superego, Oedipus complex, and dream analysis, among several others.

Orson Wells - 1915

Well known for his Shakespearean roles, Orson Welles also made a name for himself in radio and directing. Welles shook up the world with a radio broadcast of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds in 1938. In 1941, Welles set the standard for quality filmmaking with the debut of Citizen Kane.

Dr. Mukai Chiaki - 1952

On July 8, 1994, Dr. Chiaki became the first Japanese woman in space when she flew as a payload specialist aboard the space shuttle Columbia. Her second mission took place on October 29, 1998, aboard the space shuttle Discovery. With her second mission, she became the first Japanese citizen to travel to space twice.

1847

The American Medical Association is founded in Philadelphia, PA. The founding members

elect Dr. Nathaniel Chapman as the first president of the new organization.

1946

Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka found Tokyo Telecommunication Engineering Corporation. The company is later named Sony.

1954

Construction begins on the world's longest suspension bridge. The Mackinac Bridge opened to traffic three years later in November 1957, connecting the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan for the first time.

1992

Michigan's legislature became the 38th state to ratified a constitutional amendment proposed in 1789. The 203-year-old legislation limits mid-term salary increases and requires an election before raises can take effect. In essence, voters have the opportunity to elect new representation before raises take place. College student, Gregory Watson's paper for his government class proposed the amendment was still eligible for ratification. After receiving a poor grade from a doubting teaching assistant, the topic became a rallying point. Two states vied to be the 38th states to ratify the amendment, Michigan and New Jersey. Don W. Wilson, U.S. Archivist, certified 27th Amendment on May 18th. At the time, one state was unaware they had already ratified the amendment. Kentucky's ratification took place in 1792 and as a result, the honor of being the 38th state actually belongs to Alabama which ratified the amendment on May 5, 1992.

May 7th Celebrated Birthdays

Mary Mahoney - 1845

In 1879, Mary Mahoney became the first African American professional nurse when she graduated from the New England Hospital's nursing school. She also formed the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses after the Nurses Associated Alumnae of the United States demonstrated a slow response to accepting black nurses.

Gary Cooper - 1901

Gary Cooper appeared in more than 80 films during a career that lept from silent movies to sound almost effortlessly. He was nominated for his first Academy Award in 1937 for his role in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town. Cooper would go on to earn two Best Actor Academy Awards for Sergeant York (1942) and High Noon (1953). In 1961, the Academy presented him with an honorary award for his career achievements.

Eva Peron - 1919

The Argentine actress became the first lady of Argentina in 1946. Peron became a powerful political figure, advocating for women's suffrage and the rights of the poor.

Ishiro Honda - 1911

The Japanese filmmaker is best known for co-creating the Godzilla film franchise.

Michael P. Murphy - 1976

The U.S. Navy SEAL officer served during the War in Afghanistan and for his actions received the military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor. Murphy was killed by enemy forces during Operation Red Wing near Asadabad, Afghanistan on June 28, 2005.
