Dear Friends,

As the daylight hours grow longer and the weather begins to warm, we invite you to celebrate spring's imminent arrival with a veritable bouquet of concert offerings. Third Coast Percussion performs newly-composed music by Bienen students, and we welcome tenor Russell Thomas for our latest Tichio-Finnie Vocal Master Class. An evening of electroacoustic music presented by our composition and music technology program promises an opportunity to discover experimental and eye-opening works, and Northwestern Concerto Competition winners shine as soloists with our Chamber Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra. The University Singers offer a program meditating on arrival and departure, and the Bienen Contemporary/Early Vocal Ensemble presents two concerts: one showcasing new works, and another devoted to the composers and techniques that paved the way for J. S. Bach.

The Grammy Award-winning Chicago-based quartet premieres Bienen student compositions in this Institute for New Music event. Praised for its "commandingly elegant" performances (New York Times), Third Coast Percussion has commissioned and premiered new works by composers including Philip Glass, Missy Mazzoli, Augusta Read Thomas, Glenn Kotche, and David T. Little. The ensemble maintains strong ties to Chicago's artistic community and has collaborated with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, the Chicago Children's Choir, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and the Adler Planetarium.

Tenor Russell Thomas uses his signature elegance and intensity to create vivid character portrayals on the world's most important stages. The 2021-22 season sees his return to some of his most celebrated roles: Florestan in Fidelio at San Francisco Opera, Cavaradossi in Tosca at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Radames in Aida at Los Angeles Opera, and as the title character in Verdi's Otello at Royal Opera House Covent Garden. In this master class, he coaches Bienen School voice and opera program students in music of Puccini, Rossini, Mahler, Cilèa, and Verdi.

An Evening of Electroacoustic Music

The program includes a variety of electronic pieces for up to eight speakers, including Kasia Glowicka’s I Thought It Was a Dream But When I Woke, I Couldn’t Walk, a piece inspired by Afghan women writers’ poems; Olive Haugh’s Remakings, an exploration of the human voice; Yvette Jackson’s Swan, a three-part radio opera that “opens aboard the tall ship Swan transporting Africans along the Middle Passage to the Americas and gradually morphs into a spacecraft in search of freedom”; Ji Youn Kang’s Enfolding Plane III—Punky Pulse Pool; and an eight-channel work by composition and musicology lecturer Chris Mercer.

The Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra performs Frédéric Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 11, the concerto the composer performed during one of his 1830 "farewell" concerts before leaving Poland. Also on the program is W. A. Mozart's Symphony No. 41 in C Major ("Jupiter"), earning its nickname from its grand scale and exuberant energy.

Philharmonia performs the overture to Giuseppe Verdi's Nabucco, the composer's first operatic success. Bienen student cellist James Cooper is the featured soloist in Robert Schumann's Cello Concerto in A Minor, Op. 129—a work Clara Schumann declared "wholly ravishing," though it remained something of an undiscovered masterpiece until after the composer's death. The program concludes with Antonín Dvořák's euphoric Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88, a work that signaled a new artistic direction for the composer.

The Symphonic Band closes the winter performance season with the Alfred Reed transcription of Joaquín Turina's festive, joyful La Procession du Rocio, Op. 9; Chen Yi's folk music-inspired Suite from China West; and Zhou Tian's spirited Seeker's Scherzo. Also on the program are Nicole Piunno's Beauty Broken—the composer's response to viewing a memorable photograph of a bouquet of exploding flowers—and Paul Dooley's vibrant and dynamic Manifestos, inspired by the artistic vision of the early 20th-century Futurists.

Spring Events Now On Sale

Tickets for spring events are now available! In the months to come, we welcome special guests including lutenist Hopkinson Smith, pianist Juho Pohjonen, and the Beijing Guitar Duo. We look forward to multiple world premieres, including Christopher Cerrone's The Last Message Received, Victor Goines' Gonna Take That Train Home, and the multimedia choral opera Árbol de Bocas ("Tree of Mouths"). Before the spring season comes to a close, we offer two much-loved masterpieces, as Northwestern University Opera Theater presents Puccini's La bohème and the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra bids farewell to conductor Victor Yampolsky with two performances of Mahler's Symphony No. 9.

Ensemble performances highlight faculty soloists, and retiring faculty members Steven Cohen and Gail Williams bid farewell to the Bienen School with a special recital including several of their colleagues.

As the weather grows warmer and the days grow longer, we are excited to welcome you back to our spring season with an array of concerts for all musical tastes. April begins with a performance by lutenist Hopkinson Smith as part of our Segovia Classical Guitar Series, and Juho Pohjonen joins us for our Skyline Piano Artist Series. Faculty members shine as soloists with our ensembles for performances of 2021 Nemmers Prize winner William Bolcom's works and music of Clara Schumann. To round out the month, the Symphonic Band presents compositions that range from heartwarming and funky, and Bienen choirs join the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra for the world premiere of Christopher Cerrone's The Last Message Received.

Prolific international lutenist Hopkinson Smith presents his program "Bright and Early: Italian and French Lute Music from the First Printed Sources," with works ideally suited to the six-course lute. The concert features the compositions of Joan Ambrosio Dalza and Francesco Spinacino, as well as music from the first French lute tablatures of Pierre Attaingnant that highlights improvisatory preludes, lively dance music, and beautiful chanson settings.

Faculty violinist Desirée Ruhstrat joins the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra to perform Bolcom's bluesy and bold Violin Concerto, a work that the composer wrote for his colleague Sergiu Luca. Also on the program is Barber's Second Essay for Orchestra, a piece written just before he left to serve in the Army Air Corps, and Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, the last major work that the composer completed in his prolific career.

This evening’s performance celebrates Professor Steven Cohen’s many years at Northwestern with 2021 Nemmers Prize winner William Bolcom’s Concerto for Clarinet and Band. The program also features music of a close friend of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Joel Puckett, as well as Karel Husa’s iconic Music for Prague 1968, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth.

Internationally renowned pianist Juho Pohjonen was awarded the 2009 Klavier Festival Ruhr Scholarship by Sir András Schiff. His growing repertoire showcases an array of Scandinavian music as well as composers from his home country of Finland, including Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kaija Saariaho, and Jean Sibelius. This season continues Pohjonen’s long-standing relationship with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center with two performances at Alice Tully Hall, and also sees engagements with the Colorado Symphony and Minnesota Orchestra.

Bienen faculty pianist Sylvia Wang joins the Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra to perform Clara Wieck Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor, which the composer began writing at the young age of fourteen. The concert also features Bolcom's Symphony No. 1, the first of nine he wrote between 1957 and 2012, and Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, a work composed after an inspiring trip to Germany's Rhineland.

This program highlights the music of Joel Puckett and Omar Thomas, two prominent contemporary voices in wind band composition. The gentle joy of Avelynn’s Lullaby was inspired by composer Puckett’s experiences as a father. Thomas’s decidedly funky The Low-Down Brown Get-Down is, in his words, a soundtrack to an imagined blaxploitation film, “a genre of filmmaking aimed at African-American audiences which puts us in leading roles of stories that often followed anti-establishment plots.” The Symphonic Band’s program also features a beloved classic, a transcription of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition translating Maurice Ravel’s colorful orchestration to the wind band medium.

A preconcert conversation with composer Christopher Cerrone and conductor Donald Nally will take place before the performance at 6:30 p.m. in the McClintock Choral and Recital Room with free admission.

The Last Message Received is inspired by the blog of the same name. In 2014, 16-year-old Emily Trunko created a space for people to anonymously share their final communications with loved ones. Thousands of posts later, composer Christopher Cerrone and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann collaborate to create a sometimes dramatic, sometimes intimate, and sometimes joyous tapestry of these plaintive communications. This commissioned world premiere is answered with one of the great Requiems of the 20th century, that of Maurice Duruflé, in his version for full orchestra.

Dear Friends,

Spring is coming into full bloom, and we invite you to take advantage of the lakeshore views and campus landscape while enjoying incredible music. This month, we see the Dover Quartet's long-awaited return, and retiring faculty members Steven Cohen and Gail Williams celebrate their time at the Bienen School with a special recital featuring multiple world premieres. Our Symphonic Wind Ensemble performs a program featuring music of David Diamond, Ida Gotkovsky, and Michael Colgrass, as well as Strauss's poignant Allerseelen, and the Beijing Guitar Duo continues our Segovia Classical Guitar Series. Our harp studio presents a collaborative student and faculty recital, and faculty pianist Karen Kan-Walsh teams up with pianist Julian Kwok for a performance featuring Mozart, Ravel, Brahms, and Lutosławski. Before the month is out, Northwestern University Opera Theater presents the beloved Puccini classic La bohème.

It's a month of endings and beginnings as our school year winds down and the heat of summer warms the lakeshore. But there's still time to enjoy some beautiful music before our concert season comes to a close. June opens with an Evening of Strings presented by members of the Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra, performing favorite selections by Grieg and Tchaikovsky. The Symphonic Band celebrates the 85th anniversary of Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy and pays homage to Picasso's series of bovine lithographs with Viet Cuong's new work, Bull's Eye. The University Singers explore the meaning of finitude through works by Per Nørgård, David Lang, and others, and last—but most certainly not least—Victor Yampolsky conducts the final concerts of his Bienen School career, leading the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra in Mahler's sweeping Ninth Symphony.

2022 marks the 85th anniversary of Percy Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy, widely considered a cornerstone of the wind band repertoire. The Symphonic Band’s June performance of the work is a celebration of these two factors. The composition is a set of six movements, each developing a folk song Grainger collected on Edison wax cylinders while exploring various regions of England. Viet Cuong’s new work for chamber ensemble was inspired by Pablo Picasso’s 1954 work Bull, a series of ten lithographs. The composer explains, “The first lithograph is a fully formed bull that, over its next two iterations, increases in opacity and detail. Then, over the next eight panels, layers are gradually peeled away to reveal just the essence of the bull.”
