This deeply moving two-person piece reunites director Robin Witt with Steep ensemble and cast members Peter Moore and Kendra Thulin. The trio first worked together in 2010 on Steep’s hit U.S. Premiere of Simon Stephens’ Harper Regan and have since collaborated on notable Steep hits Light Falls, Linda, Wastwater, Motortown, and Pornography.

The new Steep will feature an intimate, flexible 70-seat black box theater with advanced theatrical and technical capabilities; a lobby-lounge to welcome audiences, foster conversations between artists and audience, and host off-night programming and community events; and comfortable support spaces for our artists and staff.

His American premiere production of Matias Vestergård's Murder on the Titanic plays at the Windy City Playhouse May 1 and 3. This North Park University production sinks all rules of narrative by bringing together a ship full of characters: some real, some fictional, some who weren’t even on the Titanic, and many of whom lived at different times from one another. Dream Hou$e, which earned both the Kendeda Award and Steinberg Playwriting Award in 2021, is a crowd-pleasing comedy with a twist that asks: What is the cultural cost of progress in America? Andrea Brands

Andrea Brands is happily semi-retired from a communications career that included various positions in politics, government and corporate affairs. She keeps busy these days by reporting to her dog and cat, who rule the roost and run a tight ship. She also lifeguards at a nearby pool a few days a week and tries her hand at circus skills with wildly talented and creative people. "Come hang in the air with me, it’s good for the soul."

Live theater is also good for the soul, and I’m thrilled to join the board at Steep. I am drawn to the ensemble’s caliber and its commitment to thought-provoking work. Steep also plays an active role in its community while contributing to the overall culture of Chicago theater, exemplifying the best in local theater. I hope to play a supportive role in Steep’s future growth and success, as well as the essential contribution the arts make in our world.

Luther Goins

In 1990, after working extensively in Cincinnati, Ohio, as a producer, director, and acting instructor, Luther Goins re-located to Chicago. Since then, he has worked as the Assistant to the Producer at Northlight Theatre, Resident Artistic Director at the African American based Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre in Evanston, IL., and as the Managing Director of the Chicago Theatre Company.

In 2002, Luther accepted a Business Representative position with the Chicago office of Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the United States. After retiring from Actors’ Equity, he has worked as a Theatre Management Consultant for small and midsize theaters. Luther held the honor of being the first African American Board Chair of Season of Concern, an organization founded in 1987 to support Chicago theater practitioners and artists.

Why Steep?

Like so many other small and midsize Chicago Theatres that I love, Steep is all about talent, professionalism, creativity, and determination. I am humbled by anything that I can do to help and support them, and their future...especially during these extremely difficult times.

Arnold Park

Arnold Park is an experienced legal and business advisor with a strong background in litigation, corporate strategy, and operations. A former Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago and Assistant State’s Attorney for Cook County, he now oversees all business and legal functions for Alicia International, Inc.

Why Steep?

I am an avid supporter of theater having witnessed the profound impact of theater. I was drawn to Steep because I observed that it was an inviting, inclusive space where uncomfortable truths were revealed, challenging real issues were discussed, and everyday moments reflecting larger societal issues were explored.

Kathleen Rafferty

Kathleen Rafferty is a communication strategist with diverse domestic and international experience having worked in public, private and nonprofit sectors. She is passionate about storytelling and has demonstrated expertise in building and protecting organizations' reputations through corporate responsibility and ESG, employee engagement, executive positioning, issues management, and public affairs.

Why Steep?

I have always been a big supporter of the arts, because art, and specifically theater, has the ability to transform us by helping us see things through a different lens than our own. Since first being introduced to Steep over seven years ago, I've always been impressed by its unabashed honesty and fearlessness. Behind the Scenes with Ensemble Member Debo Balogun!

Ensemble Member, Debo Balogun, recently wrapped filming his upcoming project Exes of Christmas Past, set to premiere this holiday season. Debo pulls back the curtain on working on a film set versus performing for the stage in this exclusive interview.

How is the process different between working on a movie and doing live theatre?

I guess one of the big differences for me is the amount of rehearsal you get. For a play, you're used to having 3-5 weeks of rehearsals where you're cracking into the text, exploring on your feet with your castmates and the director, asking questions, and getting to know your character. The preparation process for a theatre actor is much longer and more collaborative - you have the time to really work the play into your bones. Whereas, in film, you're doing a lot of the prep work on your own at home. Maybe the film director will have a day or two of rehearsals prior to when principal photography starts where the actors will read the script aloud and get the opportunity to ask questions. But for the most part, that prep work is done solo. Then you show up to set with an idea of your character to put forth (while still being malleable to direction), you set and rehearse the blocking for whatever scene you're doing maybe once or twice, then the director calls "action" and the scene is filmed (several times from several different angles). And then you move on. What you did in those takes is how that scene will live forever. I find that it is a much more mechanical process than doing live theatre.

It comes with its benefits too. If you mess up in a take, you can just start over and the editor will cut around it. On stage, you don't get any do-overs. But what you do get on stage is the ability to immerse yourself in a story chronologically (usually) from start to finish. And that is really thrilling to me. Long story short: both mediums are very fun and rewarding to work in even if they come with their own set of limitations.

What is it like working on a movie that is set around

Christmas time?

In the case of this movie: warm. We shot the film in the final weeks of April when the weather ranged from 40 degrees to 70 degrees. The actors were costumed as though it were December so naturally on those hotter days of filming things got a little sweaty. Luckily production came equipped with ice packs to help cool people down.

Beyond that, there is an air of joy and awe working on a Christmas movie, in no small part due to the amazing work of our Art Department who made all of our sets look absolutely magical.

What was the best part about working on this film & why?

Truthfully: the people. I don't know how but production managed to assemble the kindest, most patient, talented, and collaborative group of people for their cast and crew. Not only was everyone astoundingly good at their jobs, but also everyone was genuinely committed to working together to make the best movie we could. That type of work environment is crucial when you're working 12+ hour days.

Also getting to stay at the Cherry Tree Inn Bed and Breakfast was amazing! Much of our film takes place in a B&B, and so we spent a full week shooting on location at the Cherry Tree Inn in Woodstock, IL (pictured here). Fun fact: it's the same B&B that the movie Groundhog Day was filmed!

Since we were working long hours and Woodstock is a good 50 miles from Chicago, production arranged to have myself and other members of the cast crew stay overnight at the Cherry Tree B&B throughout that week of filming. It felt like a cute little Christmas sleepaway camp!

Exes of Christmas Past is a very different piece compared to A Case for the Existence of God. What do you change about your process as an actor in order to play such different roles?

I would say the process for A Case was definitely more research-heavy as an actor. During rehearsals for that play, our director Robin Witt shared a lot of information about the demographics and culture of Idaho, specifically the city of Twin Falls, ID where the play takes place. Since the character I played in A Case was an adoptive father, I did a lot of research on the ins and outs of the adoption process in addition to being curious about understanding the unique set of anxieties and other emotions that can come up when navigating a harrowing process such as straight adoption or fostering-to-adopt.

With Exes I was able to take a more light-hearted approach. The movie takes place in a fictional suburb of Chicago, so there was no research to be done on the location. My character Ellis is a quirky, big-hearted, well-intentioned guy who is unfortunately plagued by a lot of relationship anxiety which is a plight I can relate to very well, so there wasn't a ton of work I had to do in order to step into his shoes. Because of this, I think I was able to relax more which led to some really lovely moments on and off camera during this shoot.

What was your biggest takeaway as an actor on this project?

Whenever I have wrapped on film or TV projects in recent years, my takeaway has always been "trust yourself". That definitely still rings true this time around, but it's also accompanied by the lesson of "trust your crew". The thing about acting on film is that, at the end of the day, the way your performance looks and is perceived is entirely out of your control. Once everything is shot, the director will work with the editor (in this case our director Jake Jarvi is also editing the film) to pick out the takes and moments they liked best and stitch everything together to make the finished product. My job as an actor is to give them a series of solid options to choose from and then trusting them to use those options to craft the best, most compelling story they can. During this project, it became clear to me how much faith you need to have not only in yourself but the people around you. Because no one wants to make a bad movie. It's in the collective's best interest to spotlight and lift everyone else up on the way to achieving that shared goal of a finished quality film.

Check out Pretty Shahid, a dynamic new play written by Omer Abbas Salem, directed by Laura Alcalá Baker, and featuring a performance from Debo Balogun alongside several Steep alums. Presented through A Red Orchid’s Incubator workshop series, performances are June 29 and 30 at 7:30 PM.

A young Iraqi immigrant is hit in the head with a thrown bottle the day after 9/11 and he wakes up sounding just like his favorite American – Julia Roberts. As he and his family navigate the racist days that followed the tragic day, he uses his new voice and lost memory to become more American.

This is a play about assimilation and what we choose to forget about ourselves to fit in. It’s a romantic comedy, though. And gay. And has singing and dancing, just like any Julia Roberts movie, but way more political resistance. Experience some culture, comedy, and an uprising!

Brilliant Adventures by Alistair McDowall, 2015

Named by New City as one of the Top 5 Shows of 2015, Brilliant Adventures captivated audiences with its "twisty, darkly comic" (Time Out Chicago) production directed by Ensemble Member Robin Witt. A reclusive inventor’s world-changing device draws dangerous attention, threatening his home, his family, and the fabric of the universe. With a stellar cast and crew and the Steep debut from Ensemble Member Brandon Rivera, this production was a standout of a fantastic season.

Lela & Co by Cordelia Lynn, 2017

Chris Jones from the Chicago Tribune called this production "a flawless piece of work." With his Four Star rating and an incredible array of outstanding reviews, Lela & Co played to packed houses night after night. Based on a true story, this show was an enthralling story about the courage and perseverance of women in conflict zones.

The two-person production directed by Robin Witt and starring Ensemble Member Chris Chmelik and the astounding Cruz Gonzalez-Cadel earned Steep three Jeff Awards, including Best Production, Best Director, and Best Performer in a Principal Role.

Birdland by Simon Stephens, 2018

When you can have whatever you want, whenever you want it, what do you ask for next? Birdland, directed by Ensemble Member Jonathan Berry, sought to answer this question in Steep's Four Star (Chicago Tribune) production. The show was one of the hottest tickets of the summer, with an entirely sold-out run and long waitlist. WC Turck claimed this was "Theatre at its finest," and NewCity Stage stated the show was "one of Steep's most memorable works."

Paris by Eboni Booth, 2022

Steep's Midwest Premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winner Eboni Booth's Paris was the first show in Steep's new building at 1044 West Berwyn. The production sold out before it even opened and, man, did Paris deliver! Named one of the Top Ten Shows of 2022 by the Chicago Tribune, Chris Jones called it “[a] master class in putting on a play in a raw space" and "a heck of a reminder of what we have been missing.”

Moment by Dierdre Kinahan, 2012

"The latest example of the exemplary ensemble work that so often sets Chicago actors apart" (Chicago Sun Times). Moment, directed by Jonathan Berry, brought Steep even more Four Star acclaim and Jeff Award nominations. On an ordinary evening turned unforgettable, an Irish family is forced to face the past when Nial returns from prison, bringing with him a dark secret and the need for reckoning. This ensemble piece was "riveting...gripping" (Chicago Tribune) and filled with outstanding performances that had audiences enthralled long after the final moment of the show.

The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui by Bertolt Brecht, 2007

Directed by Jonathan Berry, The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui was the Can't Miss production of the summer. A large Ensemble cast brought to life this "dazzling swift paced spectacle" (Windy City Times), including the late, deeply missed Brendan Melanson. Brecht's epic recounts Hitler's rise to power through the story of a gangster's attempt to take over the Cauliflower Trade in 1930's Chicago.

This summer blockbuster emphasized Steep's staying power in our earlier seasons and was named one of the Top Ten Shows of the Decade by Kelly Kleiman of Dueling Critics.

Book of Days by Lanford Wilson, 2005

One of Steep's earliest blockbusters, Book of Days, directed by Ensemble Member Brad Akin, told the story of Ruth Hoch. When murder roars through a quiet Missouri community, she begins her own quest to find truth and honesty amid small-town jealousies, religion, greed and lies. This show marked the Steep debut for several now long-time Ensemble Members, Melissa Riemer, Patricia Donegan, Cindy Marker, and Egan Reich, and featured an unforgettable cast of performers with a "sophisticated arresting ensemble balance." (TimeOut Chicago). The Windy City Times noted that the show "demonstrates the high standard earning this storefront company its reputation" and the production garnered Steep's first Jeff Award nominations.

A Case for the Existence of God by Samuel D. Hunter, 2024

From one of the earliest to our most recent blockbuster, A Case for the Existence of God directed by Robin Witt, captivated Steep's audience at the Edge Off Broadway. This incredibly intimate two person show told the story of two single fathers search for hope and human connection as they confront crises of parenting and financial insecurity. With incredible performances from Ensemble Members Debo Balogun and Nate Faust, this production sold out every performance, with some wait lists long enough to sell the show out twice!

Third Coast Review stated that "Faust and Balogun’s connection is luminous, with both actors crafting subtle, multi-layered performances" and the show earned Four Stars from the Chicago Tribune with a full page spread on the cover of the Arts section. As we look to Steep's future, we know this production will remain unforgettable.

Ensemble Member and Artistic Director, Peter Moore, reflects on Colorado New Play Festival

Pete recently spent a week in Steamboat Springs, CO, at the Colorado New Play Festival working on Roundabout Theatre's workshop of Noah Diaz's Creature Feature, directed by Caitlin Sullivan. Noah's play You Will Get Sick was just on stage at Steppenwolf and Caitlin recently co-directed the Goodman's production of The Antiquities.

"It was an unforgettable week," Pete reports. "The space that the Colorado New Play Festival (CNPF) has created is just magical - so generously supportive, energizing, and inspiring. And the scenery wasn't bad either."

The workshop included a week of rehearsals and development with a team of playwright, director, dramaturg, stage manager, and cast and culminated in a public performance at week's end. "I was really grateful for the opportunity to work with so many wonderful artists from across the country. What CNPF does to build build and expand our theater community is invaluable."

Pete thinks you'll be hearing a lot about Creature Feature in the near future, as well as the other plays developed there this summer. CNPF has a pretty impressive track record, including past Steep favorite The Few by Samuel D. Created by Ensemble Member George Cederquist, Op*erratic is a fully unscripted operatic improv spectacle, where the plot, music, and mayhem are created in real time. Armed with classical voices and a flair for the absurd, the cast transforms audience suggestions into spontaneous stories full of soaring arias, tragic misunderstandings, and unexpected finales.

City of Chicago increases grant to Steep!

Steep is thrilled to report that the City Council met Thursday and approved an increase of $880,000 in grant funds for the construction of our new theater. These additional funds bring the City of Chicago’s total support of our project to $3,868,535 and will enable us to get the wheels moving on construction later this fall!

We’re overjoyed and honored by the city's investment in our company and profoundly grateful for all of the work by the Department of Planning & Development on our behalf and the continuous support of Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth and the 48th Ward Office.

“Our city's commitment to Chicago's storied theater community and its investment to ensure that the arts remain an integral part of our city’s bright future is inspiring,” shared Artistic Director, Peter Moore. “We can’t wait to get to work on bringing a vital cultural and community hub back to Edgewater and the City of Chicago.”

"We're thrilled that Steep Theatre has found their forever home in Edgewater, and we look forward to having them back on Berwyn very soon! Edgewater has a vibrant theatre community with world class performances, and the Steep ensemble has been at the center of that community for over 20 years. Hookman by Lauren Yee, 2017

Costume Designer Mieka van der Ploeg's work scared the daylights out of audiences in Lauren Yee's edge-of-your-seat slasher comedy Hookman.

First Love is the Revolution by Rita Kalnejais, 2019

Another brilliant design from Mieka van der Ploeg, First Love is the Revolution drew audiences into a world of foxes and star-crossed lovers. The Windy City Times called the show's design, "a visual masterpiece."

Birdland by Simon Stephens, 2018

With beautiful design work from Ensemble Member Emily McConnell, Birdland was all about pushing the boundaries - something for which Steep is well-known.

Construction Crews on the Scene at

1044 W Berwyn!

Steep’s construction team at Norcon, Inc. was on site this past week finalizing demolition plans and making arrangements to begin work on Steep's new home. Seeing everyone on site together made it clear -- this project is truly moving, and now it is moving fast!

With mobilization in the works, we will be scheduling our official groundbreaking shortly. Keep your eyes on your inboxes for more information on that celebration in early December.

Thank you for your steadfast support and belief in Steep's future. The months ahead will be full of activity and momentum and we look forward to sharing regular updates with you along the way as we move towards opening the doors to Steep's new home.

Steep is Breaking Ground December 11!

Steep Theatre will mark the start of construction on its new theater with a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, December 11 at 10:30 AM.

Please join Steep’s ensemble and board, our contractors from Norcon, Inc., our architects from Civic Projects Architecture, members of the Steep community, Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, and other officials from the City of Chicago as we celebrate the exciting work ahead and the enormously supportive community that has made this thrilling project possible.

Steep is set to begin the work of converting a former church into its new artistic home, which will feature a flexible 70-seat black box theater, a welcoming lobby-lounge for performance and community engagement, and dedicated, accessible spaces to support artists and staff.

Steep’s new home is located at 1044 West Berwyn Avenue in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago and the ceremony will be held in the parking lot. The Steep community will begin gathering at 10AM for refreshments and the ceremony will begin at 10:30AM.

Note: Due to construction, there will be no parking or restrooms on site.

Last Thursday, December 11, 2025, Steep Theatre broke ground on the new theater! It was a glorious day and we are grateful to everyone who turned out to help us celebrate.

Though a bit chilly, we were warmed by your enthusiasm and support. Thank you to you all! Special thanks to Alderwoman Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth and Department of Planning & Development Commissioner Tim Jeffries for taking part in the ceremony and launching this project in grand fashion.

2025 was an exciting year for Steep. We opened the year with the Chicago Premiere of A Slow Air by David Harrower featuring Ensemble Members Peter Moore and Kendra Thulin, directed by Ensemble Member Robin Witt. Called "atonishing" by Stage and Cinema and "a piece of artwork" by Splash Magazine, this Jeff Recommended production was a joy to bring to life.

We close the year one big step closer to coming home to 1044 West Berwyn. Celebrating our groundbreaking with you all was one of the greatest (and coldest!) moments in Steep's history.

2026 will bring a new home, new shows, and new conversations. It is also the year that Steep celebrates 25 years of creating bold and fearless theater. Demolition is underway!

The Steep team visited the construction site this past week and had the chance to see the building in the midst of demolition. In this first photo, Board Member Ted Lowitz stands in what will soon become Steep’s black box theater. Imagine with us a beautiful new floor and the flexibility to stage productions in the round, thrust, or proscenium, capturing the intimacy and immediacy that has defined Steep's work. The high ceilings will allow for bold lighting design, and best of all, the space will be completely free of sightline obstructions, meaning no poles blocking your view and a truly immersive experience for every seat in the house.

To the right is a picture of what will become our lobby lounge. This space will grow in size when we knock down the outer wall and expand to the west of the theater. Once complete, it will be a bright, welcoming gathering place, featuring a beautiful bar that will be perfect for grabbing a drink and continuing the conversation with our artists after the show.

Ensemble Member Jonathan Berry returns to Steep to direct Steep 25, an evening of performance and storytelling celebrating the company’s remarkable 25-year history. This weekend only, Steep celebrates its 25th Anniversary with Steep 25: A Quarter-Century of Fearless Theatre. This special performance will feature scenes and stories from the acclaimed Steep ensemble reflecting on Steep's journey from scrappy storefront artists to one of Chicago's most beloved and essential theaters. To commemorate this milestone Steep is fundraising $25,000 for another 25 years of fearless theatre. If we reach our goal of $25,000 by the end of this weekend, a generous donor will match with a $25,000 gift to our Lights Up capital campaign, which funds our new performance space and forever home in Edgewater.

Leadership Update

Marisa Macella, who served as Executive Director at Steep Theatre, will be stepping into a new role as Executive Director at Theatre of Western Springs beginning in March 2026. Marisa has helped Steep through a period of growth and transition; we’re deeply grateful for her work in helping finalize plans for our new building including navigating a complex grant process with the City

of Chicago, kicking off construction,

and preparing to reopen our doors this fall. While we will miss working with her, we are excited for Marisa and wish her great success.

“Being part of the Steep community has been one of the great joys of my life. I am so proud of what we accomplished together to ensure that Steep will continue to thrive for years to come, including building its new forever home,” said Marisa Macella. “I carry everything this community has taught me to a new organization that invests deeply in young artists and creating meaningful arts experiences. Steep will always be part of me, and I look forward to cheering it on and celebrating many milestones to come.”

This transition also marks a catalyst moment for Steep, as it will allow us to reimagine what our organization looks like moving forward. We are in the process of examining our organizational and staffing needs in preparation for the opening of our new theater this fall. This proactive work builds on Steep’s strong foundation while identifying new opportunities for growth, helping us prepare intentionally for a bright and sustainable future.

“We are immensely grateful to Marisa for all of the energy and passion she brought to Steep during her tenure. She will be missed, but we're excited about this new opportunity for her and know she will still be an enthusiastic member of the greater Steep community going forward,” said Artistic Director Peter Moore. “I'm also excited for our work ahead to create a staffing structure that will support our art, artists, and audience in our new home for years to come.”

We’re energized by this period of reflection and planning, and we look ahead with confidence and excitement. We’re immensely grateful to our community for your continued support as we enter this next phase together. More updates will be shared in the coming months as our plans take shape.

For three nights the Bramble Arts Loft was filled with audience members and artists who have helped shape Steep’s story over the last quarter-century. The performance was not only a celebration of Steep’s history, but a reminder of what lies ahead for the company - a bright future of bold, new work in our beautiful, new home. We can't wait to share many more years of art and community with you in the new Steep Theatre.

Construction continues on our new home at 1044 W. Berwyn. Most recently, foundation was poured for the additions, new plumbing and electric is going in, and the installation of the new theatre floor is underway!
